Professor Dick Hayward
Dick Hayward has worked for over 30 years mostly on the minority languages of the Horn of Africa, including the following languages that fall within the severely endangered category: Afar, Irob-Saho, Arbore, Bayso, S'aamakko, Zayse, Koyra (Koorete), D'irayta. Additionally he has encouraged primary field research on endangered languages (often as long-distance supervisor) by academics working on their own languages (e.g. Majoid, Gonga, Maale and Hamar in South West Ethiopia, Kunama and Nara in North West Eritrea, the creole Tigre on the Dahlak Islands, Lacustrine Ometo in South Ethiopia). As part of these endeavours he arranged funding through DANIDA to bring to SOAS in 1998-9 14 native Eritrean language-developers for training in relevant linguistic areas. He has (unsuccessfully) sought funding in the past to document some of the 130 indigenous languages of the Horn of Africa and is currently engaged on preparing dictionaries for Gamo and Afar.
