ELAR Equipment Resource Management
ERM is a service offered to ELAP and SOAS Linguistics
postgraduate students, staff and associates. It matches the needs and skills of fieldworkers to the items available in the HRELP equipment pool, by offering:

- advice and training
- allocation of equipment
We aim to optimise the overall operation of the HRELP equipment pool. We also aim to maximise
fieldwork equipment skills and outcomes by ensuring that fieldworkers
have appropriate equipment and the skills to use it.
ERM provides access to the HRELP equipment pool. Note that
the pool is limited and we can only lend equipment that is available at the time requested. Neither a
request nor authorisation by an academic supervisor guarantees that an item of equipment will be available.
If you are a student wishing to borrow equipment, follow
these steps:
- Use Form 1 to write an overview and draft list of your equipment plans
and needs as early as possible (ie as soon as you start
planning a field trip). Tell us your overall goals and list
equipment items you wish to borrow as well as items you
will provide independently ... download Form 1 (FEPF)
- Consult your academic supervisor and ask her/him to authorise
your proposal ... download Form 2 (FEA)
- Attend one of the ERM information and allocation meetings.
These are held regularly (approximately every 2 months)
... list of provisional meeting dates
- You will be allocated an equipment advisor (Tom Castle,
Bernard Howard, or David Nathan), who will help with reviewing,
advising and allocating your equipment.
- Allocation of Equipment pool resources will be according
to availablity, suitability for purpose, and policies.
Note that policies are not yet fully worked out and we cannot
be responsible for equity or other academic issues related
to access to equipment.
You are also welcome to
discuss your plans informally with us. For general queries
to ELAR staff, please email Tom at tc23@soas.ac.uk to make an appointment
or come along to R201 between 2-3pm on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays or Fridays.
