PhD and MPhil

ELAP's PhD/MPhil in Field Linguistics is available to students who have completed:

  • MA in Language Documentation and Description (details); or
  • MA in Linguistics

All students are initially enrolled for a one-year MPhil degree, where they complete:

  • coursework (determined individually for each student)
  • a Research Training Seminar
  • two chapters of work towards a dissertation

Students can then apply to upgrade to the PhD programme. Upgrading students present an upgrade seminar. The PhD programme comprises:

  • fieldwork, generally overseas, which will normally occupy 9-12 months
  • a dissertation, which will normally be completed in the final year

Students may choose their own area of research focus, subject to the availability of supervising staff (for staff research interests, please see the Staff page).

Funding for fieldwork can be applied for from ELDP and other professional academic sources. Please see the SOAS scholarships page for more information
