Software Tools for Linguists

This course is an introduction to three software tools used for Language Documentation - Toolbox (lexicography and interlinearisation), ELAN (time-aligned audiovisual transcription/annotation), and WeSay (lexicography). Each session will begin with an introduction/demonstration by the lecturer, and then the rest of the session will be devoted to practicals. The course will finish with a session covering integration between the three programs, and further applications beyond compiling a documentary corpus. No prior knowledge of these programs is assumed.

NB. Students should bring laptops to this course.

Students should download and install the programs (which are all free) before coming to the first session. The programs can be downloaded from the following websites (choose the latest 'stable' release):
