Language Variation: Fieldwork and Contact LinguisticsThe aim of this course is (1) to bring people up to date on the state of affairs on the field of contact linguistics (including pidgin/creole studies); (2) to provide them with examples of how variation in language has shaped the field, and (3) in sum, to convince upcoming field workers that variation in language is not a problem, but a gift that is to be treasured, and therefore needs to be collected. In particular practical issues concerning the documentation and description of language variation are discussed. |
