Language Documentation and Description

Programme

The summer school programme contains a number of innovative courses designed to train participants in the techniques of language documentation and description. Participants must choose the courses they would like to attend when they register.

Courses

From Monday - Thursday, morning sessions will consist of a plenary lecture and tutorial for all participants. In the afternoons, participants will be able to attend those courses which best suit their needs and interests.

Plenary lectures and tutorials will cover various topics, including:

• Issues in language documentation
• Communities and ethics
• Data collection methods
• Documenting sign languages
• Digital language archiving
• Language documentation and linguistic theory
• Language policy
• Language documentation and typology

Participants will be able to choose afternoon courses in:

• Lexical semantics
• Tone in Bantu languages
• Data and archiving
• Sociolinguistics of language endangerment
• Cariban languages
• Documenting sign languages: from field to archive
• Documenting special vocabulary
• Grammar writing
• Caucasian languages
• Amazonian languages

On Friday 26 June, a full day of interactive practical sessions will be held on:

• Software tools
• Advanced video
• Advanced audio
• Applying for a research grant

On Saturday 27th June, CIPL will host the CIPL Conference on the Sociolinguistics of Language Endangerment.

On Friday 3 July, SOAS will host a Student Conference on Language Documentation and Description.
