Scholarships

To help with the expense of attending the summer school, the 3L Consortium, in collaboration with the Permanent International Committee of Linguists (CIPL), the Endangered Languages Academic Programme (ELAP) at SOAS, the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS), the Linguistic Association of Great Britain (LAGB), Cambridge University Press (CUP), the Australian Linguistics Society (ALS), the Endangered Language Fund (ELF) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are offering a number of scholarships to student participants in financial need.

There are seven types of scholarship administered by SOAS:

  • CIPL Scholarships
  • ELAP Scholarship
  • 3L Scholarships
  • LLAS Scholarships
  • LAGB Scholarship
  • CUP Scholarship
  • NSF Scholarships (pending)

The Australian Linguistics Society are also offering a scholarship:

  • ALS Scholarship

Other funding opportunities for participants include:

  • ELF Scholarships

Applicants who apply for the SOAS administered scholarships will be considered for all those for which they are eligible.

The deadline for applications for the SOAS administered scholarships is 15 April 2009.


CIPL Scholarships

The CIPL Scholarships, funded by the Permanent International Committee/Comité International Permanent des Linguistes are open to applications from participants that are not from high income OECD states or the European ministates (see a list of high income OECD states at the bottom of the page).

Two CIPL scholarships are available:

  • One scholarship will cover the cost of enrollment and accommodation, as well as a contribution of £500 to cover the travel cost/expenses of the recipient.
  • A further scholarship will cover the cost of fees for a student participant.

ELAP Scholarship

The ELAP Scholarship, funded by the Endangered Languages Academic Programme (ELAP) at SOAS is open to applications from participants that are not from high income OECD states or the European ministates (see a list of high income OECD states at the bottom of the page).

The scholarship will cover the cost of enrollment and accommodation, as well as a contribution of £500 to cover the travel cost/expenses of the recipient.


3L Scholarships

There will also be a number of 3L Scholarships open to applications from all participants who require financial assistance (including those from the high income OECD states). These scholarships, sponsored by the 3L Consortium will cover the cost of enrollment and accommodation only.


LLAS Scholarships

The LLAS scholarships are open to UK students only and are sponsored by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. The scholarships will cover the cost of the fees only.


LAGB Scholarship

The LAGB scholarship is sponsored by the Linguistic Association of Great Britain. The scholarship will cover the cost of the fees only.


CUP Scholarship

The CUP scholarship is sponsored by Cambridge University Press. The scholarship will cover the cost of the fees only.


ALS Scholarship

An ALS Scholarship of up to $2500 is available to a student member of the Australian Linguistics Society who wishes to attend the 3L International Summer School on Language Documentation and Description.

Applicants should provide a recommendation from their supervisor, a 1-2 page statement of why they want to attend and how it will inform their research, a budget, and an indication of other funding options they have available. Applications should be sent to als-exec@googlegroups.com by 15 April, 2009.

Please note that applicants who apply for this scholarship must apply separately for the SOAS administered scholarships, if they wish to do so.


NSF Scholarships

The NSF scholarships are open to graduate students at US universities only. Pending final approval from National Science Foundation (NSF), these scholarships will cover fees, accommodation, and transportation for five to seven students to attend the summer school. ASL speakers are particularly encouraged to apply, as ASL interpretation will be available.

To apply for an NSF scholarship, please tick the appropriate box in the registration form. There is no need to fill out any other form or to contact the NSF. These scholarships will be administered by Eastern Michigan University.

Other funding opportunities

The Endangered Language Fund (ELF) will also provide financial assistance to participants at the summer school. More details of how to apply for an ELF Scholarship will be available here soon.


How to apply

To apply for a SOAS administered scholarship, participants must complete and submit an online registration/scholarship application form. More details about the registration process can be found on the registration page

Scholarship applicants must also send off their payment form by fax or post to the address listed on the registration page by 15 April 2009.
