Documenting sign languages

This lecture will outline the emerging field of documentary sign linguistics, with a particular focus on some of the important methodological issues in documenting signed languages of deaf communities. We will give an overview of current or recent sign language corpus projects, such as those focussing on signed languages in the UK, The Netherlands, and Australia. We will discuss issues around annotation of the data and ongoing challenges of signed language description, as well as some of the ethical considerations involved in working with deaf communities.
