23 June - 4 July 2008
University of Lyon
Organised by the 3L Consortium Lyon | Leiden | London

Locally run by the CNRS Laboratory Dynamique Du Langage (DDL), University of Lyon

Programme details

This summer school aims at introducing the concepts and practices of language documentation and its links to language description for future and novice field linguists. It will draw upon the extensive expertise of the three organizing universities involved in these domains.

It is co-organised by the Africa Latin America Endangered Languages (AALLED) program of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) of the University of Lyon, the Leiden University Centre of Linguistics, and the Endangered Languages Academic Programme (ELAP) of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

This international summer school on Language Documentation and Description will include general presentations and workshops in English, with the possibility of group discussions in French for linguists working in francophone countries. Mornings will include keynote talks of general interest followed by group discussions; afternoons will alternate linguistics fieldwork sessions and workshops on new methods and technologies used in the Documentation - Description - Archiving. Access to group discussions and work sessions will be restricted to 50 selected participants. There will be evening co-events with open admission including talks by international guests, public debates on selected topics, exhibitions on endangered languages, and film screening.

A student conference will take place at mid-point of the summer school and one of the AALLED program major conferences on issues of work on endangered languages organised by the University of Lyon will take place at the end of this summer school.

This summer school will launch the collaboration of the three participating universities within the context of developing and running together a European International Master in ''language description and documentation'' to start academic year 2008-9.
