The Last Speakers
Every two weeks, the world loses a language.
This documentary film on endangered languages shows the work of David Harrison and Gregory Anderson on the language of the Ös people who live in log-cabin villages in central Siberia, 3,500 km east of Moscow. Their language, previously studied by Russian linguists 30 years earlier, is being documented with support from HRELP's ELDP. The film traces the work of linguists, activists, teachers, and students in locations ranging from the mountains of Taiwan to the shantytowns of South Africa.
The film was premiéred at SOAS on 17 May 2006. A discussion with the film makers, Seth Kramer and Daniel Miller of Ironbound Films, followed the screening.
