Teaching field linguistics techniques

SOAS Linguistics Department, together with the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS, the UK national body supporting HE teaching of languages, linguistics and area studies) are hosting a workshop Teaching field linguistics techniques.

The workshop is aimed at students interested in learning more about fieldwork, and staff who are considering how fieldwork might fit into the linguistics curriculum. We will cover a range of fieldwork types, including language documentation and urban sociolinguistic fieldwork. Presentations will be given by staff and post-graduate students from SOAS, Manchester University and Queen Mary, University of London.

The final session will include reports by students in SOAS' MA in Language Documentation and Description who recently participated in a two-week fieldwork trip to Guernsey.

There will also be a display of fieldwork equipment (recorders, microphones, video cameras, solar panels, carrying cases, etc.) during the lunch break, with staff from the Endangered Languages Archive and post-graduate fieldworkers available to discuss it.
