Topic
This workshop gives an introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS), focusing specifically
on their uses for linguistic studies and language documentation. The use of this technology in the
humanities is still in its initial stages but it is an exciting growing field with a huge potential
in several sub-disciplines of linguistics.
The workshop consists of two parts: an open lecture with some demo applications and a tutorial where
participants will be able to try some of the software currently used in digital mapping. In the lecture,
I concentrate on some basic concepts of GIS such as vector vs raster geography, file formats and software
tools. I also show some demo applications such as the use of GIS for better locating lesser known languages,
mapping languages in cities and visualizing area patterns in typological research. During the tutorial
exercises the participants will become familiar with basic uses of the ESRI products, ways to import
tabulated data and how to produce their own maps. Please note that there are only 12 places available for
the tutorial session and registration is required.
