The Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project  The Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project

An Integrated Approach to Teotepec Chatino Language Documentation through History and Culture

Justin McIntosh, University of Texas at Austin

Project Details:

Individual Graduate Studentship. Duration: 2010-2012. £31,513

Project Summary:

This project will produce an integrated corpus of transcribed and analyzed texts from Teotepec Chatino, a highly endangered Otomanguean language of Oaxaca, Mexico. A strong emphasis on speaker training, and community participation at historical and cultural documentation, in the creation of written Chatino materials for speakers with varying levels of literacy will be integral to this work and lead to the composition of a uniquely community focused documentation that will reflect a rich but quickly disappearing body of narratives and procedural text. This will augment my previous work on Teotepec Chatino and be of value to native speakers and scholars.
