Spoken Karaim

The CD-ROM includes stories spoken in Karaim, written texts, a dictionary, video clips, pictures, and Karaim music. These elements are comprehensively hyperlinked to allow the sounds, texts and dictionary to be used in many different ways. The CD uses a navigational metaphor based on the map of the Karaim street in Trakai, Lithuania.

The Karaims are a unique group with their own culture, religion, and language (which belongs to the Turkic family), today spoken by just 40 people.

The Disappearing Sounds of the World’s Languages

The CD-ROM is an interactive presentation of a public lecture by Peter Ladefoged at SOAS in February 2004, including soundtrack, transcription, and graphics.

Just released is verson 2 which now runs on Macintosh and has new playability features.

Hearing Voices: languages / speakers

The CD-ROM contains recordings of speakers of endangered Khoi and San languages, songs by Khoi and San choirs and interviews with Andy Chebanne (University of Botswana) and Peter Austin (School of Oriental and African Studies). The recordings were made by sound artist John Wynne. The CD-ROM was produced by Robert Munro and John Wynne and has featured as a multimedia kiosk at the Museum of Botswana, National Gallery of Namibia and the Brunei Gallery, London.
