Guess the Stress

Guess the Stress

This is a Q&A game where you can listen to sentences and then guess where in that sentence the most emphasis is placed.

Intonation is the music of the language. In English, we use pitch to signal emotion, sentence structure, and change in meaning among many other things. In every sentence in English, there is one main emphasised syllable or word. The vowel sound in this syllable sounds higher in pitch, longer, and louder, and this is what we call stress. This helps create the rhythm of the language, and knowing how to recognize the stressed syllable is a big part of knowing how to speak a language.
